I know that you have been working closely with COPE and CSU, and that you are close to a settlement on pension issues. I want to encourage you to finalize benefit improvements to our pension plan. Retirees can’t wait.
As you know, CUPE retirees have not had a cost of living adjustment for almost a decade! Without inflation protection, I have watched the value of my pension decline year after year. Those who retired after 2008, have seen a 16% decline in their purchasing power. Immediate relief is required. Partial indexing is a minimum until interest rates improve, and the plan is healthy again. Then we anticipate full, guaranteed indexing so that CUPE retirees and active employees can plan for a financially secure retirement. We welcome the commitment to regular cost of living adjustments to enable retirees and active employees to plan with confidence for the future.
I know I speak for more than myself when I say that 10 years is too long to wait for cost of living adjustments. We commend the parties on the progress they have made. It has taken a lot of work, patience and effort to get to this point. Let’s finalize the deal now!
